[Balin] Shoplifting? But it's far too heavy

Postby Balin » Fri Aug 16, 2019 12:13 pm

A woman, out shopping, takes an item from the shelf and looks over it. She glances around, making sure no one is watching, then peels off the price sticker. Giving a long sigh, she puts the price sticker back on the item and returns it to the shelf. Why?

Re: [Balin] Shoplifting? But it's far too heavy

Did she want to see if someone react? If there were cameras? Does he peel it back after a second? A minute? Some minutes? An hour? Does she put the peel back inside the shop? Outside of it? Does she want to see if there was something under it?
Does she want to cover a sound with the sigh? Relevant the woman's job? Security related? Did she want to steal the object? To buy it? Relevant what was the object? A toy? A dvd? An appliance? A food/drink? Junk food? Something related to house cleaning? Others? Clothing? Jewelery? Could she afford to buy it? Was the object on sell (i mean if it could be sold)?

Is technology involved? Internet? Was the woman in a supermarket? In another shop?

Do you mean shoplifting as in 'stealing an item from a shop', or as in 'lifting an item off the shelf in a shop', or another meaning ? Is it relevant what kind of shop it is? Is the item indeed heavy in weight? Is it heavier than she expected? Weight = (number of grammes)? Is the price sticker covering something, such as a flaw? Has she seen the item before? Did she go shopping for such an item? Does she leave the store immediately or does she carry on shopping?

Did the price sticker cover up the expiry date? Or also list the expiry date? And the shop covered up the date (or old date/sticker) with a new sticker?

Did she want to see if someone react? If there were cameras? She wanted to make sure no one saw her - you can ignore this part of her actions, as it doesn't have much to do with the rest of the puzzle
Does she peel it back after a second? A few seconds A minute? Some minutes? An hour?
Does she put the peel back inside the shop? This Outside of it? Does she want to see if there was something under it? No
Does she want to cover a sound with the sigh? No
Relevant the woman's job? No Security related? No
Did she want to steal the object? No To buy it? No
Relevant what was the object? Yes A toy? A dvd? An appliance? A food/drink? Junk food? Something related to house cleaning? Others? Clothing? Jewelery? None of these
Could she afford to buy it? Yes Was the object on sell (i mean if it could be sold)? It was being sold in the shop, Yes

Is technology involved? No Internet? No Was the woman in a supermarket? No In another shop? Yes

Do you mean shoplifting as in 'stealing an item from a shop', or as in 'lifting an item off the shelf in a shop', or another meaning? You may ignore the title - it is only a joke that is meant to obfuscate and cause groans
Is it relevant what kind of shop it is? Yes
Is the item indeed heavy in weight? No Is it heavier than she expected? No Weight = (number of grammes)? I'll just say "not very heavy"
Is the price sticker covering something, such as a flaw? No, good idea though
Has she seen the item before? That specific item? No. An item like it? Yes, many Did she go shopping for such an item? Yes Does she leave the store immediately or does she carry on shopping? She continues shopping

Did the price sticker cover up the expiry date? Or also list the expiry date? And the shop covered up the date (or old date/sticker) with a new sticker? No - good guess, though

Was the item originally priced differently... higher, lower? No

Is she shopping for clothes? Shoes?

Is she near-sighted and can read the sticker only from a very short distance? Or does she check if the sticker goes on and off easily?

Sigh = of relief? Of pain? Of resignation? Was there another stick under the one she peeled off? Relevant where the sticker was on the object? On a relevant part? Relevant what was written on the sticker?, what she does with the sticker? Alarms relevant? Bar codes? Price?

Object = musical instrument? technology? Hygene? Health care?

Were there other similar objects in the shop? Did she take a specific one among them? Relevant its position w.r.t. the others?,
Could she use the object pnce and then put it back?

Did she love the item, was it intended for someone else/? Was she buying a car? Would it help to know what the item was? Was it a ticket for a show? Was it an item she returned to a shop for an exchange? Would it be useful to discover what kind of shop it was? Was fraud involved?

Is a contest relevant? Is she hopeful that the back of the sticker (or the part it was covering on the item) would reveal that she had won something?

Is it a pet store? Is she indeed even in a store? Is she outdoors (such as at a farmer's market or fairground)? Indoors? Is she in a mall? Stand-alone store? A bookstore? Does the store a variety of unrelated goods, like a Walmart or something similar? Is it a department store? Antique store? Hardware store? Would the item she's looking at normally be used indoors? Outdoors? In the home? Is it used for leisure/entertainment?

Did she look at the back of the sticker? Did she already own an item like this? Was she replacing an old one? Relevant? Did she (also) want the sticker itself... if it had some relevant quality?

Is the item something people usually own more than one of (or at least the ones using it)? Did the sticker stand out in some way compared to the other stickers on the same item? To the shop items in general? Did it have the sticker of another item?

Is the object a book? Is the price sticker inside the book? On the cover? Or maybe should it have been on a book? Should it have been on a different book? Different editions of the same book relevant? Is there another price under the price sticker (if so was the price below the sticker higher? Lower?)? Was there a discount? Did she wrote a book? Did someone else related to her? Secondhand goods vs new one relevant? Did the price sticker cover a relevant part of the book? A relevant part of the civer if the book?

Assuming that the sticker was on a book..
Is she disappointed for: the way the book was written? The way the book was formatted? The way the sticker was put? What the sticker covered? By the fact that she could throw away the sticker? Did she expect so? Could the price on the sticker be confused with a code/classification of the book? With the title? Did it cover a part of the title? Was the book near some other relevant book (e.g. a collection and the price sticker covered the number II)?

Did she iwn an identical item (I mean the same one withthe same title)? If so, did she pay it more? Less? Did she want to return it

Was anything relevantly under the sticker? Or relevantly not under the sticker? Is the woman the author of the book? The editor? Cover artist/photographer? Is the genre of book relevant?

Since she owned the book (but another copy) already, is it relevant whether she’d read it? Had she? Had an accident befallen her copy? Relevant whether this bookstore is a used book store?

When peeling off the sricker, did she expect something to appear under it? Did she know that it covered something? If so, due to the fact that she owned a book with the same title? Did she intebd to buy the book even if she owned another version of it?

So she owned another edition of the same book right? A previous one? The immediately previous one? A much older one? Was the sticker in an ambiguous position? Was the sticker rectangular? A circle? A square? Relevant? Did it cover a relevant portion of the book cover? Can we assume that it was on a corner? If not, was it maybe put such that the book could not have been opened without breaking it? Was it easy to notice the sticker and the price? Was tbe book about money? Prices? A blank book to be filled? Was it a romance? A novel? Orhers? Relevanr?

Were there pictures on the cover? Writings? Relevant? Relevant the color of tbe sticker w.r.t. tge color of tbe cover? Were there more than a sticker? Was the sticker on the front cover? On the back cover? On the "bridge" of the book? When she put the sticker back, did she put it in its original place? Did the sticker cover a relevant info (a measure? A symbol? A distance? The edition? A defect if the book?) ? About the edition of the book? About the author (has it got an author?)? About the content? To be sure can we assume a normal book? (Or maybe an audio book?, Bible?, phone book?, cookbook?,agenda? Book of instructions?..)

Was anything relevantly under the sticker? Or relevantly not under the sticker? This!
Is the woman the author of the book? The editor? Cover artist/photographer? No to all
Is the genre of book relevant? Yes

Since she owned the book (but another copy) already, is it relevant whether she’d read it? Yes Had she? Yes Had an accident befallen her copy? No Relevant whether this bookstore is a used book store? Not particularly, but you can assume Yes

When peeling off the sricker, did she expect something to appear under it? No Did she know that it covered something? See above If so, due to the fact that she owned a book with the same title? Did she intend to buy the book even if she owned another version of it? Assume No

So she owned another edition of the same book right? Yes A previous one? Probably The immediately previous one? Possibly A much older one? Possibly Was the sticker in an ambiguous position? No Was the sticker rectangular? A circle? A square? Relevant? Irrel Did it cover a relevant portion of the book cover? See above Can we assume that it was on a corner? If you like If not, was it maybe put such that the book could not have been opened without breaking it? No Was it easy to notice the sticker and the price? Yes Was tbe book about money? Prices? A blank book to be filled? Was it a romance? A novel? It was a novel in a certain genre; No to rest Orhers? Relevanr? Yes

Were there pictures on the cover? Yes Writings? Yes Relevant? Yes Relevant the color of tbe sticker w.r.t. tge color of tbe cover? No Were there more than a sticker? No, just the one sticker Was the sticker on the front cover? Yes On the back cover? On the "bridge" of the book? So no to these When she put the sticker back, did she put it in its original place? No! Did the sticker cover a relevant info No, see above (a measure? A symbol? A distance? The edition? A defect if the book?) ? About the edition of the book? About the author (has it got an author?)? About the content?
To be sure can we assume a normal book? Yes, a normal paperback book (Or maybe an audio book?, Bible?, phone book?, cookbook?,agenda? Book of instructions?..) It could theoretically have been an audiobook. No to rest

Certain genre: Fantasy? Sci-fi? Mystery? Horror? Comedy? Other? Had the book been misidentified/mislabeled as another genre than intended?

Did she want to see if it was a different print of the book with something specific on the cover? Something that was removed from newer prints? And if so, was this edition rare?

Was rhe something not under the sticker a spoiler? Was it present just on the new editions? Was there a movie of the novel? Relevant? Was the cover a scene of the movie? Was it something that only who have read the book would have noticed? Anyone? Something missing?

Did he put the sticker in order to cover a symbol? A writing? An image? A charachter? Was a part of the cover transparent?

WAG --> did someone write on a sheet over the cover of the book pressing a lot so that relevant writings appeared on the cover of the book? Relevant which book it was near the shelves with?

When she peeled off the sticker did it leave a residue on the book cover? Is she looking for a copy of the book that has the potential to be very valuable?

Is true crime relevant?

Was the cover an image of a screen and a relevant hour was displayed? A notification? Was the cover composed by an image of something rrlevant? Related to the story? A coubtryside? Is the subject/title of the book relevant? ...i would call the list instead of making a series of questions...but idk...I will wait for your instructions Balin :(

Spoiler = It's not exactly relevant what the spoiler is. But since you pretty much solved this with the last set of questions, here's another

****SPOILER****

The woman spotted a copy of a mystery she loved. Since this copy was a different edition from the one she owned, she took it off the shelf and looked at it, but saw that the cover contained a major spoiler for the solution of the story. So she peeled the price sticker off and stuck it over the spoiler.

Nice job working through this one, Earnest!
