Did Mary misbehave before? Yes! Did he teach her something her parents didn't manage to teach her? More like calmed her down so her parents could teach her.
This is mostly solved, so here is the

As a small child of about 3 or 4, MaryBeth was hyperactive, and something of a brat and a bully. She terrorized her sister - who was 5 years older! What one might assume to be a perfectly harmless story would set her off on violent action. The only thing that seemed to calm her was watching 'Mr. Roger's Neighborhood." This was after the invention of VCRs, so they taped as many shows as they could and she watched the over and over, all other stimulation being forbidden. Gradually, she improved.
She is now a gentle, mature, grown-up young woman. When her mother saw the documentary about Mr. Rogers, she was moved to tears, as he seemed to be pretty much ths same kind of person off camera as on. She wished she had written to him and told him how he helped MaryBeth, but they just aren't the kind of people who write to celebrities.
