[WiZ] The Ghost of Birthday Presents (OAATP)

Postby WiZ » Wed Sep 18, 2019 8:46 pm

A man buys himself a gift to treat himself on his birthday. He then gets a surprise visit from his parents, who have bought him an identical gift. At first annoyed, he is later delighted. Why?

BOATS. Caveat Earlispoilor. OAATP rules apply.

Was the gift somthing that is commonly bought for birthdays/ whose value is proportional to the quantity directly or indirecrly? (E.g. cookies = directly because the more i have the more i can eat. Clothing indirectly because at first the more identical i have and no value is added, but then one realizes that he/she could dress the same the double of time washing half of times)

Is it something which transforms or improves the more you buy? E.g. lego

Does he end up using both gifts the same way? Different ways? Only using one?

Was he annoyed before having seen the gift of the parents? A moment after? Before having considered that he could have a benefit by having two identical gifts rather than just one?
Same q. for "delighted" rather than "annoyed".

Does he keep the two gifts in separate locations? Is it something he'd like to have in both places but is too bulky/awkward/at risk of being stolen to constantly have to move?

Did he sell one of the items? If so, was he originally planning on doing so when his parents gave him the gift? Or perhaps it suddenly increased on value for some reason after he received it?

Is the gift: clothing? Book? Piece of furniture? Car? Travel? Relaxing activity? Ticket for an event (e.g. as a WAG I would say he ended up with two tickets for two people)? Related to technology?

Is it related to: sport? Pictures? Payments? Something that gives the right to do something? To do something in a certain amount of time per item (the gift) owned? Something that is more in quantity the more items are owned (e.g. discounts)? Buying stuffs? Taking part to an event?

Roundtrip tickets relevant (assuming the parents already knew what he bought in a first instance)? Scratch cards? Stamps? Duty stamps? Collections? Barcodes? Codes? Pin? Passwords? Pay the rest of something relevant? Something usually bought all together? In pairs?

Roundtrip tickets relevant (assuming the parents already knew what he bought in a first instance)? no Scratch cards? No, but VERY ORT Stamps? Duty stamps? Collections? Barcodes? Codes? Pin? Passwords? Pay the rest of something relevant? no to these Something usually bought all together? In pairs? no to both

Trebor

Lottery yes/raffle tickets?

***** SPOILER *****

He had bought himself a Lotto ticket with his usual numbers. His parents had done the same. He initially thinks he has wasted his money, but then his numbers come up. There is only one other person with the same winning numbers, so he scoops 2/3 of the jackpot rather than 1/2.

Congratulations, Trebor, on the solution, and thank you everyone for playing!
