[IrishElk] Wreck-it Rolando

Postby irishelk » Sat Jun 27, 2020 2:17 pm

Rolando is not a big reader, does not work in the book industry, and does not normally pass a bookstore or library. But for a period of months, he finds himself seeing different copies of one particular book almost every day. Why?

Is Rolando H? A? M?

Are the copies identical to each other? Is the book a new release? Is it popular? Has Rolando read it? Had he heard of it prior to the period of months when he saw it? Is Rolando's profession relevant? Are the copies of the book owned by people who are reading it? who plan on reading it? Is the book fiction? nonfiction?

Does Rolando sell or distribute the book as a part of his otherwise unrelated job? For example, does he work in a government office where the public might come to collect information pamphlets?

Is the book seasonal? A massive bestseller? Does he see it while travelling?

Does he see the actual book, or just references to it (ads, etc)?

Is Rolando H? A? M? Yes.

Are the copies identical to each other? Nearly, but actually there would be a small difference. Is the book a new release? Yes. Is it popular? Yes. Has Rolando read it? No. Had he heard of it prior to the period of months when he saw it? No/irr. Is Rolando's profession relevant? Yes. Are the copies of the book owned by people who are reading it? Yes, or... who plan on reading it? ...yes. Is the book fiction? No. nonfiction? Not exactly, but it would be on this side of a bookstore.

JenBurdoo

Does Rolando sell or distribute the book as a part of his otherwise unrelated job? Yesish to "distribute." For example, does he work in a government office where the public might come to collect information pamphlets? No.

Is the book seasonal? No. A massive bestseller? Yes. Does he see it while travelling? No.

Does he see the actual book, or just references to it (ads, etc)? The actual book.

GalFisk

Does he work in recycling or garbage? No, but good idea. Is the book liked? Yes. Disliked? Popular? Yes. Unpopular?
Have the books he see been read? Probably most have. Sold? At some point, yes. Discarded? Given away? Bought? At some point, yes. Damaged? Technically, yes, but this will only mislead. Misprinting relevant? No to rest.
Does he abnormally pass a bookstore or library during this period? Irr.

Does he deliver books? Packages? Mail? does he see the books before they get to their owners? While they're being bought? When transported to the owners? When being carried by the owners? Does he work in public transit? Does he see people carrying the books? Reading the books? Buying the books? Does he handle a lost&found? Do people keep losing this book, and that's why he sees it?

If this book was mailed, wouldn't it normally be in an opaque package of some sort? Is he able to tell that it is this specific book he is delivering?

Does he see the whole book? Just one page? Are you supposed to tear out one of the pages and mail it to someone?

Does he see the whole book? This. Just one page? Are you supposed to tear out one of the pages and mail it to someone? No, but very close.

Googling welcome, although I found this surprisingly hard to Google.

Do people write the address on the book itself, with no additional envelope?

Do they mail it to other people? back to the publisher? to themselves? Is one of the instructions "Mail the book to your future self"?

Is the book physically different than most books in any way? If so: is the dust jacket an envelope? Is it made especially to be posted? Is it a single page? Is it very thin? Thick? Big? Small? Does it have a space for address and stamps on it? Is each book sent through the mail once? Multiple times? Is the book resilient enough to be sent unwrapped without being damaged? Does it have a lock? Padlock? Is it sent through the mail because they want it to become worn?

Do people write the address on the book itself, with no additional envelope? Yes...

Do they mail it to themselves? Is one of the instructions "Mail the book to your future self"? Yes...

GalFisk

Does it have a space for address and stamps on it? Yes!

*********************************SPOILER

The book is the very popular Wreck this Journal, which gives various instructions for what to do on its pages (hang this page outside, paint this page with nail polish, etc.). On the back of some of the editions, there is space for mailing addresses and stamps, with the instruction TAPE THIS JOURNAL CLOSED. MAIL IT TO YOURSELF.

Rolando, a postal employee, is used to seeing book-shaped packages in the mail. But in the weeks after the journal is a New York Times bestseller, he suddenly starts seeing hundreds of copies of these books traveling naked through the postal system!
