Amanda is a young woman from Wellington. She and her two male friends, Ben and Calvin, are looking for work. One day, they see a job advertisement, calling for men. Ben and Calvin realise they are not qualified, but Amanda applies, and is successful. How come?

Are Ben and Calvin not qualified because of their age? no physical characteristics? yes education? (lack of) experience? skill set? religion? language background? no to rest ethnicity? I don't think so, but I'm not sure. To exclude them on this basis would likely have had unfortunate implications, but there would be some incentive to do so nonetheless.

Will the actors be playing men? Women? People of unspecified gender? By and large, these people will be playing characters who present as the same gender as the actors do. That's a very 21-st century sentence. Non-human Middle Earth creatures? no!

I think that's enough.

It was a casting call for the Lord of the Rings films. They were looking for extras to play people of 'the race of men' (i.e. the humans of Middle Earth). Amanda is of average height and is accepted. Ben is very short and later lands a role as a hobbit. Calvin is extremely tall and strong, and lands a role as an Uruk-hai.
