[CoffeeBean] Glibbanaught (Or "Of Inverted Chevrons")

Postby CoffeeBean » Wed Jul 29, 2020 7:17 pm

When one detects the presence of a glibbanaught, he or she may...
1. Perform a subtle maneuver if others are present
2. Do nothing at all if no one else is present
3. Become irrational and inconsolable

This is only detectable by humans, and they can be of almost any age.
Usually only children will respond with reaction #3 above, but some children have become quite skilled at reaction #1.
It is common for people who react in the form of #1 or #2 to laugh before they take action.

So what is a glibbanaught?

Is it detected by human because it's a state of mind? Is that thing that's being detected...detected through sight? hearing? smell? taste? touch?

Is a glibbanaught a person, place or thing? Is it alive? Bigger than a breadbox? Is it only found alone, or in pairs or groups? Does it move?

Is it detected by human because it's a state of mind? The thing itself is not, but state of mind is involved in the detection of it
Is that thing that's being detected...detected through sight? This, yes hearing? smell? taste? touch?

Is a glibbanaught a person, place or thing? "Thing" is the only one of these that would describe it Is it alive? No Bigger than a breadbox? No (beware FA) Is it only found alone, or in pairs or groups? Does it move? No

Is a glibbanaught tangible? Directly visible? Or does seeing something make you aware of a glibbanaught? Does it have anything to do with the potential for something occurring (e.g., a Lego that one might step on)?

If others are present, might you perform a subtle maneuver: to hide the glibbanaught? To prevent embarrassment? To prevent something else? For safety? For entertainment/amusement? For the sake of the other people?
Would the maneuver be verbal? Physical? Mental?

Is a glibbanaught tangible? No - good q Directly visible? Yes (see next answer) Or does seeing something make you aware of a glibbanaught? Yes, exactly Does it have anything to do with the potential for something occurring (e.g., a Lego that one might step on)? Yes

If others are present, might you perform a subtle maneuver: to hide the glibbanaught? No To prevent embarrassment? No
To prevent something else? Yes For safety? No For entertainment/amusement? No For the sake of the other people? No, not for other people...
Would the maneuver be verbal? Physical? Mental? The subtle maneuver would be physical

Do you do the maneuver for your own sake? For anyone else's sake? In order to explain other actions? Is a glibbanaught a situation? Can more than one person notice the same glibbanaught? Respond to it? Do children respond with #3 out of: fear? Loss? Sorrow? Confusion? Anger? Pain? Helplessness? Can one mistake a glibbanaught for something else? Vice versa? Can a person cause a glibbanaught for themselves? Intentionally for someone else? Can you do a glibbanaught? Perform a glibbanaught? Be caught up in a glibbanaught? Resolve one?

Do you do the maneuver for your own sake? Absolutely! For anyone else's sake? Surely not!
In order to explain other actions? No Is a glibbanaught a situation? Yes, best term for it
Can more than one person notice the same glibbanaught? Yes, and... Respond to it? ...this too.
Do children respond with #3 out of: fear? Loss? This, in a sense Sorrow? This too Confusion? Anger? Mostly this Pain? Helplessness? In some cases this
Can one mistake a glibbanaught for something else? Oh no, it's quite clear what it is Vice versa? No
Can a person cause a glibbanaught for themselves? Actually yes, this is possible
Intentionally for someone else? Yes, and many people would be inclined to do this
Can you do a glibbanaught? Perform a glibbanaught? Not these, but...
Be caught up in a glibbanaught? ...this! Resolve one? I suppose this is possible

Is a glibbanaught a: problem? A dilemma? A prank? Something misleading? Something most people experience? Would a decent person intentionally cause one for a child? Would causing one for someone else be considered: mean? Harmless? Fun? Childish? Does the presence of other people change the nature of the glibbanaught? Only of the response? Can you cause a glibbanaught accidentally for yourself? For someone else? Is an object involved?

Is a glibbanaught a: problem? For some, yes A dilemma? A prank? Something misleading? No to these
Something most people experience? Only certain people do
Would a decent person intentionally cause one for a child? No, but could accidentally cause one for a child
Would causing one for someone else be considered: mean? To a small degree, I suppose
Harmless? Fun? Childish? Possibly would be considered any of these
Does the presence of other people change the nature of the glibbanaught? No Only of the response? Yes Can you cause a glibbanaught accidentally for yourself? No, not possible For someone else? Yes
Is an object involved? Yes

Is the involved object owned by the victim of the glibbanaught? The one causing it? Someone else? Nobody? Can multiple people cause one glibbanaught? Can one person cause multiple glibbanaughts at the same time? Is the object bigger than a breadbox? Can a glibbanaught be caused by an animal? By nobody? Is embarrassment relevant? Is the likelihood of response 3 dependent on whether other people are present? Relevant where a glibbanaught can be experienced? If so, at home? At work? In public? When traveling? Playing? Exercising? Performing a sport?

Is the involved object owned by the victim of the glibbanaught? Not usually, but possible The one causing it? Same Someone else? Usually this Nobody? Someone owns it, but sometimes that person is unknown Can multiple people cause one glibbanaught? Sure Can one person cause multiple glibbanaughts at the same time? Certainly! Is the object bigger than a breadbox? No Can a glibbanaught be caused by an animal? No By nobody? Someone has to be the cause of it Is embarrassment relevant? No
Is the likelihood of response 3 dependent on whether other people are present? Yes
Relevant where a glibbanaught can be experienced? May be helpful, but only to know aspects of the location
If so, at home? Very often, yes At work? Possible, yes In public? Maybe When traveling? Possible Playing? Exercising? Performing a sport? Not likely, a glibbanaught would not be happening while another engaging activity is taking place

Could it happen while a boring activity is taking place? While waiting? Can one wake up to a glibbanaught? Be awakened by one? Can it be ignored? Even when others are around? Is the object made from: paper? Plastic? Glass? Metal? Rubber? Ceramic? Clay? Bone/teeth? Skin/fur/leather? Dirt? Stone? Gemstone? Paper/cardboard? Wood? Liquid? Gas? Food? Drink? Cork? Fabric? Thread/string/rope? Is it electric? Electronic? Mass-produced? Natural? Could one cause a glibbanaught when Jesus was born? In medieval times? In a warzone? Underwater? On the ISS? Can a baby cause a glibbanaught? Must the object be moved to cause a glibbanaught?

Could it happen while a boring activity is taking place? Maybe While waiting? Sometimes
Can one wake up to a glibbanaught? No, but that's a great exploration type question Be awakened by one? No Can it be ignored? Yes, and probably often is Even when others are around? Yes but this would make it more difficult for some to ignore Is the object made from: paper? Plastic? Glass? Metal? Rubber? Ceramic? Clay? Bone/teeth? Skin/fur/leather? Dirt? Stone? Gemstone? Paper/cardboard? Wood? Liquid? Gas? Food? Drink? Cork? Fabric? Thread/string/rope? It is a food Is it electric? Electronic? Neither Mass-produced? Yes
Natural? No Could one cause a glibbanaught when Jesus was born? (I love this question too) No...In medieval times? ...no, later than these times In a warzone? It's doubtful anyone would notice in this case Underwater? No way On the ISS? Yes, and this isn't all that far-fetched
Can a baby cause a glibbanaught? No Must the object be moved to cause a glibbanaught? No

So a food is involved... is the person who experiences the glibbanaught in the process of eating the food? preparing the food? not directly interacting with the food, but near it? Is the food present in actual, material form (as opposed to, for example, a picture of it on the Internet)?

Is the essence of a glibbanaught that the food has been (or appears to have been) altered in some way (e.g. it looks like someone else has already taken a bite out of it, it looks moldy, etc.)? in some way that makes it less appetizing?

Alternatively, is the food somewhere that it shouldn't be/creates a mess (e.g. a piece of gum stuck to the bottom of a desk at school)?

Does the subtle maneuver avoid making a mess (e.g. walking to the side to avoid stepping in something)? avoid biting into something disgusting? avoid giving the appearance that the person noticing the glibbanaught is to blame for causing it?

Could the food be considered a treat? Yes, for sure

Is a child in this situation eating it? Maybe (see next answer) Does he enjoy it? Maybe, maybe not, depends on whether or not something happens
Is he inconsolable about the prospect of it being finished and gone? No, N/R

the subtle manoeuvre: it must be subtle because: it is naturally subtle? the performer doesn't want to let others to know? it's illegal, unethical, or rude? is it an instinct or a voluntary reaction?

if a child reacts in an irrational and inconsolable way grows up, does the reaction evolve gradually into the subtle manoeuvre?

if the person is hungry vs full, does it change the reaction? the degree of that reaction?

that important difference of in person vs through TV - is it that the person knows that the food is in physical reach, vs not? what if a toddler who cannot tell between TV and reality yet, sees it on TV? Would the child still behave irrationally?

Switching the channel relevant? Infomercials relevant? No to both

the subtle manoeuvre: it must be subtle because: it is naturally subtle? The purpose of it is, yes the performer doesn't want to let others to know? Yes, this is the purpose it's illegal, unethical, or rude? Not any of these is it an instinct or a voluntary reaction? Possibly both

if a child reacts in an irrational and inconsolable way grows up, does the reaction evolve gradually into the subtle manoeuvre? Very possible, and you should explore this idea further

if the person is hungry vs full, does it change the reaction? the degree of that reaction? The reaction isn't likely to change depending on how hungry/not hungry a person is

that important difference of in person vs through TV - is it that the person knows that the food is in physical reach, vs not? Yes
what if a toddler who cannot tell between TV and reality yet, sees it on TV? Would the child still behave irrationally? Maybe, but something else would need to be happening in order for this behavior to happen

Is a glibbanaught specific to only one kind of treat? If so, is it cookies? ice cream? cake? candy? popsicles? popcorn? potato chips?

Is it relevant whether the treat is sweet or salty? whether it is solid or liquid-ish? whether it comes in individual servings or portions (like cookies or candy) or needs to be divided by cutting (like cake)?

Is a glibbanaught considered an unfair situation (to the person experiencing it)?

Is it relevant whether the treat is sweet or salty? Yes, it's sweet whether it is solid or liquid-ish? Yes, it's solid
whether it comes in individual servings or portions (like cookies or candy) or needs to be divided by cutting (like cake)? Yes, and it's involving cookies so individual servings are relevant

Is it related to chocolate chips detaching from the cookie? To the melting of the chocolate chips? Is the cookie in the process of being chewed? Being taken out of a bag / container?

Cookies with differing amounts of chocolate chips relevant? Sharing? Taking the best one for oneself? Leaving the worst one when picking? Does the maneuver change which cookie the maneuverer gets? Change which cookie someone else gets?

Is one person passing out cookies, and others are choosing or requesting them? The relevant situation takes place usually after cookies have been distributed or passed out to multiple people
Does the first person to raise their hand (or something similar) get to choose first? Rock/Paper/Scissors relevant? No

Doublechecking: Are all three people responding to the same thing?

Do the children expect something else?

Re: The actual gesture:

Is it done with the hand? Hands? Finger? Fingers? (Which ones?) Could you tell someone's intentions if they did it wrong? Does it involve a utensil of any sort? Napkin? Plate? WAG: Is the cookie/cookies hidden?

Is a party or other festive gathering relevant? Would a family do this? A group of strangers? A teacher and her students?

Does it matter if they are fresh-baked? Homemade? From a store? In a container? Are they specially shaped, or are they the generic round shape of a cookie?

Could you tell someone's intentions if they did it wrong? Yes...or if they did it right
Does it involve a utensil of any sort? Napkin? Plate? WAG: Is the cookie/cookies hidden? No to these

This could happen at a party, event, or any type of gathering. And it could be done among family, friends, strangers, students, etc., anywhere that chocolate chip cookies are present.

Does it matter if they are fresh-baked? Homemade? From a store? Could be any of these
In a container? No, this would not happen if the cookies were in a container
Are they specially shaped, or are they the generic round shape of a cookie? It involves standard, usual chocolate chip cookies

RECAP:

Glibbanaughts are detected due to a person's state of mind
A physical maneuver is involved after something is seen or realized
A child usually performs the maneuver after feeling sad, angry, or a sense of loss
One would typically not need to perform the maneuver if he or she was alone
The maneuver happens when a person sees a food item that they want
The maneuver only happens when the person is near the actual food items, not when they see it on TV or in a picture
The maneuver is subtle so that the person doing it does not alert others to the action
An unfair situation is what leads to a glibbanaught
Dividing two or more cookies among people is involved
The relevant food is chocolate chip cookies, and a very relevant concern is the number of chips in each cookie that is involved
The maneuver is done to rectify what the person considers an unfair situation
The maneuver changes not only what cookie the maneuverer gets, but also what another person gets
Trading is involved in a way, and a sort of "taking" is also involved

It's basically solved, just fill in the blank: "A glibbanaught is when someone sees ___________________ and so they _____________________."

Does the person getting the other cookie see the maneuver? Know it was done? Intend for the maneuverer to get the lesser cookie? Has the maneuverer taken a cookie, when the glibbanaught is experienced? Been offered a cookie? Intended to take a cookie? Are there two cookies? More?

Does the person getting the other cookie see the maneuver? If done correctly, the only person who is aware of the maneuver is the person who does it. And this is the person who experiences the glibbanaught. Know it was done? No, if done correctly the other person doesn't know that it happens. Intend for the maneuverer to get the lesser cookie? NO, the opposite
Has the maneuverer taken a cookie, when the glibbanaught is experienced? Sometimes, yes Been offered a cookie? Sometimes this is the case (but usually something else has taken place that triggers the glibbanaught) Intended to take a cookie? No, the situation only happens after cookes have been taken or distributed
Are there two cookies? More? It can happen when just two cookies are present, this would make the person very aware of the glibbanaught. Often though, it involves more than two cookies, and this can make the maneuver much easier.

Is the worst cookie relevant? The best one? One better than average? Worse than average? Is the maneuver a swapping of cookies? A distraction? Does a child become distraught when another person has a better cookie? Has the best cookie? Can two people experience a glibbanaught from the same cookie distribution? Can both maneuver to rectify it? If they do, will they come in conflict? Can a glibbanaught be caused by someone deciding whom gets each cookie? By people picking one by one from a set of cookies?

Is the worst cookie relevant? Maybe, but certainly... The best one? ...THIS one is.
One better than average? Worse than average? Yes to both Is the maneuver a swapping of cookies? YES A distraction? This is sometimes involved, yes Does a child become distraught when another person has a better cookie? YES Has the best cookie? Yes, many times they think this is the case Can two people experience a glibbanaught from the same cookie distribution? Yes, very possible
Can both maneuver to rectify it? Possibly, sure If they do, will they come in conflict? Almost certainly, if the number of people and cookies is small enough
Can a glibbanaught be caused by someone deciding whom gets each cookie? No, but this is what leads to the glibbanaught in many cases
By people picking one by one from a set of cookies? It can happen here too

The main idea of the glibbanaught has been explained...

* SPOILER *

A "glibbanaught" is the realization that chocolate chip cookies have been given to you and others, and someone else has a cookie(s) with more chips in it than the one you have been given. When one experiences a glibbanaught, he or she may perform the subtle maneuver of swapping cookies so that now they have the best one, or if others are present they may be helpless to perform a cookie swap for fear of being caught. When the one who has the glibbanaught realizes he or she cannot change the situation, they may become irrational and inconsolable.

People of all ages can experience a glibbanaught. Children will usually become upset if they are stuck with the lesser cookie unless they are skilled at swapping cookies without being noticed. Adults may laugh at their glibbanaught and not do anything, but there are some who will swap cookies so they have the ones with the most chips.

The back-door clue in the puzzle title "Inverted Chevrons" refers to a term that some use for the less than and greater than signs (< and >), which are sideways or "inverted" chevrons.
