The famous KFC "Big Chicken" restaurant, located in a suburb of Atlanta is famous for its almost 60 foot tall corrugated steel likeness of a chicken. People who live and work nearby use it as a point of reference and landmark (people say they can gauge how long it will take them to get to/from work or to/from home based on when they reach the KFC), and commercial airline pilots use it as a reference point when landing at Atlanta's airport. When the animatronic eyes were installed and activated, they vibrated which caused the windows of the restaurant to shatter. When there was talk of tearing down the building, local residents were saddened and vowed to save the Big Chicken. Changes and upgrades have been made over the years to allow the structure to stay, to the relief of pilots and local residents.

That just goes to show how flat Atlanta is that people can see that chicken for miles. At least in those pictures it doesn't look that tall, in most major cities it would be nowhere even remotely near the skyline. Well it depends on where you are driving. The first time I went to see it I was about a mile away and wondered why I couldn't see it since it was supposed to be this huge structure. I was approaching on a road that dips downhill not too far from the building so it was hidden until I came up the hill. After hearing people from Atlanta talk about it I asked what it was and why it was so popular. They said that it's a major landmark, several TV and radio ads use it as a reference point for their own business ("We're located on Cobb Parkway, half a mile from the Big Chicken"), and most people who live and work within a few miles of it use it as a marker when giving directions (there used to be a water park nearby, and people would give directions to the park by saying "Turn right when you get to the Big Chicken...").
