Did he open a container of some kind? A door? This A window? Did he unlock something? Yes Is the "unfortunate" part simply the fact that their child is capable of getting himself into more mischief than they thought? Absolutely!

When our youngest was about 18 months old, he had figured out by observation and reasoning, how to get out of our front door. You had to take off the chain latch, then turn the knob while holding down the dead-lock. Being small, he had to pull a chair up and stand on it to do this. He was smart enough to figure all that out, but not smart enough not to do it in front of witnesses, especially adult witnesses. Good thing he did, though, because we then knew we had to watch him even more closely.
The title? There seems to be a rule of 80 & 20 here. 80% of the family stories seem to be about 20% of the family!
The kid in question has grown up to be a software developer, so he is still pretty smart, and a whole lot more shrewd.
