Spoiler:

Kyle, having trained his dog to respond to a dog whistle, positions his dog thus that Vic's ladder is between himself and the dog. (Such as inside a building on which Vic is working, in front of a door with a pet flap.) When Vic is up the ladder, Kyle blows the whistle, and the dog runs to him, upsetting the ladder in its flight. Vic falls and dies.
