[Yerushalmi] Take(out) them into custody

Postby Yerushalmi » Thu Jan 14, 2021 9:46 am

One Tuesday afternoon, two men in Bridgeport, Connecticut, decide to order takeout. Neither of them had ever committed or been suspected of a crime, and there is no warrant out for them, yet mere seconds after they pick up their order they are arrested by the police. Why?

True story? Relevant that it’s Bridgeport? Do they have the same name as known criminals? Was the order used as a “code” for “sell me weed” or something like that but they really wanted the order? Relevant that Bridgeport is the worst part of Connecticut?

I wasn't aware that it was, but that definitely shines a light on some aspects of the story.

Did they pick up their order from the restaurant? From somewhere else?
Did they order pizza? Chinese food? Fast food?
Is the name of the restaurant relevant? The name of the two who ordered food?

Did they order takeout food? From a restaurant?
Did they order an assassination?

(A belated clarification to my "yes" answer to "True story?". I've changed some of the details, but it's based on something that actually happened.)

We’re they “taking out” money from a bank? By robbing it? Did they pick up what they ordered? Is a misunderstanding relevant? Did they call 911 to order a pizza or some other food and the police said “hey why don’t you come down here to pick it up” and they were then arrested for abuse of emergency services?

Did they actually commit a crime when they ordered takeout? Did the arresting officers think they were? Same questions for when they picked up whatever it is they picked up?

Did they order something illegal? Drugs? Guns? Other weapons? A hitman? A prostitute?

Relevant how they ordered it? Over the phone? In person? With a stolen credit card? In a stolen car?

Yes to all of these. That was depressingly quick!

****************SPOILER***************
FAIRFIELD -- In another chapter of dumb criminal classics, a man and a teen from Bridgeport allegedly thought they could rob a bank the same way people order take-out food.

Police said a 27-year-old and a 16-year-old called People's United Bank on Stratfield Road about 10 minutes before they came to collect their order Tuesday afternoon. They asked for $100,000 in large bills with no dye packs inside the bag, police said.

"You can't make this stuff up," said Sgt. James Perez, Fairfield police spokesman. "They literally called the bank and said to have the bag of money ready on the floor because they're coming to rob the place. And then they actually show up as the police were rolling in. I would classify these individuals as, `Not-too-bright.' They should have spent time in school instead of trying to rob a bank."
