[Balin] All's Walt that ends Walt

Postby Balin » Fri Jan 15, 2021 2:58 pm

Walt, suffering from a chronic ailment, cures it at home with no assistance from medical professionals. Although he has a job at which he is at risk of suffering the same ailment, and keeps that job for another decade-plus, he never attempts the home remedy again, and discourages others suffering the same ailment from trying it. Why?

Is the exact type of ailment relevant?
Is it relevant what part(s) of the body is/are affected by the ailment?
After he was "cured" by the home remedy, he was never again affected by the ailment? Or was he?
Did he conclude that the remedy was worse than the ailment? Or produced an unforeseen side effect? Or took longer than expected? Or changed him physically, emotionally or otherwise after it was done?
Once he is cured and returns to the job for 20 more years, does he make any changes in the way he does the job so that he is not affected by the ailment anymore? Or does he not have to because of the result of the cure? Or does he have a job that has to be done only one way?
Is his exact job or type of job relevant?
Were any of these involved in his at-home cure: drinking something? applying heat to something? applying cold to something? eating something? moving his body in a certain way? exercise? abstaining from something? light? darkness?

Did the remedy cause unpleasant side effects? such that stayed for a long time? (like burn marks?)
Did the side effects of the remedy also prevent him from getting this ailment again? because he was no longer able to do some potential dangerous things (although staying in his job)?
Does his job involve appearing in front of public? Does he work for the government?

Does he continue in the position of a pitcher? or switch to a different position?
(being a professional baseball pitcher for more than 20 years will ruin any shoulder I guess)
Does the remedy involve to apply some substance to the skin? to ingest something? to inject something into the body? to apply physical force to the body (like in massage but perhaps not quite)?
Does it involve to apply heat? by exposing the body part to the sun? to some hot object? to hot water or steam?
Insects involved in the remedy? (thinking of being stung by a lot of bees)
Or maybe other animals involved?

Does he continue in the position of a pitcher? Yes or switch to a different position?
(being a professional baseball pitcher for more than 20 years will ruin any shoulder I guess) He's no longer active and did have a long career, but not 20 years long
Does the remedy involve to apply some substance to the skin? No to ingest something? No to inject something into the body? No to apply physical force to the body No(ish) (like in massage but perhaps not quite)? Not like that at all
Does it involve to apply heat? Yope by exposing the body part to the sun? No to some hot object? Yope to hot water or steam? No
Insects involved in the remedy? No (thinking of being stung by a lot of bees) Not this
Or maybe other animals involved? No

Did the home remedy cause: a different injury? Damage to his house? Damage to something (or someone?) in his house?

Did it disqualify him from being able to access treatment in future? Did it somehow cause a suspension (as in, disqualify him from playing in games)? Did it affect his play? Did it cause him to run afoul (pardon the pun) of teammates or managers? Did it affect his contract? His finances?

Did he receive an electrical shock? which by sheer luck also cured is shoulder?
Did he do anything to avoid a new shoulder injury? because he thought he would then need a new electrical shock to cure it?

Was the electricity used to power something he was using?

Does he discourage the remedy because: it has the potential to cause harm to a person/animal/object? Because it worked so well for him that he was able to smash records and he doesn’t want other pitchers to have the same success? (Or just, he wants his team to win, so he advocates that opposing pitchers not do this thing?)

Did he receive an electrical shock? which by sheer luck also cured is shoulder? Yes to both, and...

Does he discourage the remedy because: it has the potential to cause harm to a person/animal/object? ...Yes.

****SPOILER****

Pitcher Roy Oswalt suffered a severe shoulder injury while in the minor leagues, but accidentally cured it by electrocuting himself while repairing the spark plugs in his truck. Oswalt went on to spend 13 seasons in the majors, but obviously never tried fixing his shoulder that way again, as it's never a good idea to electrocute oneself.

Well-solved, and be careful around spark plugs.
