[peter365] Looking at your watch a third time

Postby peter365 » Mon Feb 08, 2021 3:41 pm

Hi all, a quickie i'm sure

A man is stting in his car waiting patiently at a level crossing. Despite not being overly inconvienced and being in no particular hurry he suddenly starts thumping his steering wheel in anger and frustration. A few swear words are thrown in for good measure. Whats going on?

Am I correct to assume that he's waiting for a train to pass? If so, is he getting angry and frustrated before the train passes? While the train passes? Are his anger and frustration caused by something he sees? something he hears?

Time of day relevant? Weather relevant?
Relevant where he's coming from? Where he's going?
Is he alone in the car? Is he transporting anything relevant in his car?

So he is in no particular hurry with respect to his destination? but wants to get over the level crossing soon? does he not want to be seen in this place? does he consider waiting in this place dangerous? does he have a Celtics flag in his car, by any chance?

He sees the police establishing a checkpoint on the other side of the crossing?
The train comes to a halt without clearing the crossing?
He's listening to a match on the radio and it's not going his way?

Is he waiting for a person? for a call or text?

Does he relevantly see a person? an animal? a vehicle? a building? a billboard? something in the car?

Is it allowed to stop the car in this place?
Did his car navigation lose the GPS signal and he does not know how to go on?
Is there a road crossing before or after the railway crossing?
Is the man possibly on the wrong way?
Is the railway crossing also a border crossing point?

About the Celtics flag: I remember a puzzle about a Celtics fan who drove an extra mile to avoid passing by a Rangers fan's home. Now I was thinking this could be something of the opposite: the man in the car already knows that Celtic won the game and does not want to spoil the pleasure of others.

Is he angered with something related to the level crossing? Such as the train? The barriers? The lights? Other cars? With something else outside the car? Inside? With himself? With another person? Is his response triggered by something he sees? Hears? Feels? Smells? Tastes? Did he want to prove or disprove something relevant, but was unable to?

So is there no railway line crossing the road? a defunct railway line? a railway line that has been dismantled?
Is there something crossing the road at all? (a pedestrian road? a cycling road? a bus lane? a tram? a maglev line? an airport runway?)
Does the man have to stop in that place because of crossing traffic?
Would he have to stop if there was crossing traffic? Would there ever be crossing traffic?

As you mentioned that there is a gate that closes the road for vehicles: is this gate manually operated? automatically? closes at fixed times? is triggered by animals that attempt to cross the road? is closed on demand when the person responsible for the animals requests it?
Were there any animals crossing at that moment? or did someone close the gate by mistake? just for fun?

Was the road crossing a race course? was there a race going on? and not the right horse in the lead? Yes to all and that will do the ......

*********************SPOILER***********************
Believe or not but Brighton racecourse on the south coast of England has a level crossing just after the finishing line. A public road crosses the track there and when a race is on traffic has to wait until the horses have passed the line before being allowed to continue. The driver in the this case is a gambler who watches in dismay as his horse trails in last leading to his outburst of temper.

Here's a picture of it https://d2j31icv6dlhz6.cloudfront.net/L ... hton-7.jpg
Thanks for playing and well done Sundowner
