Which country has the longest border with France?

I remember this one (and used it to great effect on high schoolers just last week, getting them to read some atlases), so this is just a test post to check out the function...

Oh, yes, this will make it so much easier to deal with the
font and style conventions. Now if only editing previous posts is supported...

Ha! and indeed it is. I strongly suggest a house rule for that, something like "Puzzle-setters may modify their initial post freely up to the point that the first answer is given". Or perhaps just require that the edit be clearly denoted and justified within the post itself, for example:

Are we talking about the contiguous republic of France (i.e. l'Hexagone)? Is the border a land border? Is the border a line, or does it wrap around its neighbour to a certain extent? Does it somehow border both L'Hexagone and another part of France?

Are we talking about France as its borders are currently drawn, in May 2014?

France is the republic of France as we know it.

I feel like "France" is going to be a red herring (i.e., it's not going to be l'Hexagone [I'd never heard that descriptor before, but quite apt]). Does France have any dependencies or territories external to the "mother country" that are relevant? Does France have Antarctic territory? Is whichever of the Guianas (or the other one) that belongs to France relevant?

I believe I've heard this one before, but I don't remember it.

Does the border adjoin with France in Europe? Does it border islands owned by France?

This is a real land border to the state of France.

    Hello,

I just registered to the new forum (#17 on the list 8-) ); now I'm trying to send a post.

As for the geography question: it is a very tricky one, and the answer to it is not simple and unique.
Furthermore, the answer has changed a several times in the 20th century, last time (arguably) in 1993.

Yes, France has dependencies (but they're only small islands, not relevant here).
Guyane is not a dependency, but a full-status department of France, like Bas-Rhin or Ile-de-France. It contains not only the largest forest of the European Union, but also Europe's only space port.

    Greetings from Telavi. ;)

So, I'm presuming it's not Spain or Germany? (Just testing the forum really).

Is the relevant border longest by kilometers? Is this border also France's longest border?
Is the relevant border the longest only in comparison with other borders of that country? In that case, is that Monaco, which has only one land border?

    Clever RedWine. :)
Yes, in the way the question is written, Monaco is the only solution, because Monaco is the country that has the longest of its borders with France.

    * * * SPOILER * * *

Sorry for the delay I have been away.

Monaco is not the answer. The country with the longest border with France is Brazil. French Guyana is considered to be part of France and it has a very long border with Brazil.
