Was the dog's ability as a guard dog tested? Did it turn out not to be a very good guard dog? Was it somehow prevented from guarding the object? Did the thief do something to silence the dog? Did the dog know the thief and therefore not react? THISWas the object stolen in a way the dog would not react to?

is something that was supposed to be not transparent, a liquid? if so, is it water? urine?

WAG: The answer is Mulholland Drive, as when they get to the Club Silence everything about the film gets clear!

This is taken from Silver Blaze, a Sherlock Holmes story...the kikler had stolen an horse by the stall guard by a dog to run away. Scherlock, which was present when the horse had been stolen, however, remembered that the dog did not bark. Hence he supposed that the dog should have known the killer...
Thanks anyone for playing and in particular congrats to Glafisk for the solution and wolfier for the many questions. Jope you enjoyed
