[Nimue] A Teachable Moment

Postby nimue » Tue Jan 08, 2019 6:31 pm

When the principal of Erica's middle school telephoned Erica's parents to complain about Erica's behavior, her father asked the principal a question that was a real question at the time (1956) but now would almost certainly be rhetorical. How come?

Erica's behaviour = being disrespectful to the teacher? bullying? truancy? cheating? failing classes? breaking school rules? not participating in activities?

Was the question related to Erica's behaviour? to a potential punishment? to the principal? to how the school is run?

Is the principal male? female? relevant?
Is it an all-girls' school? relevant? Could the same situation happen with a boy instead of Erica?

Is it relevant that the conversation happened on the phone? Could the father have asked the same question face-to-face? Could the mother have asked the question?

Is it a yes/no question? Would the question be rhetorical now because the answer is an obvious yes? an obvious no?
Would it be rhetorical because of a change in culture?

Is race relevant? religion? gender? sexual orientation? family constellations?

Was the question about a personal detail of the principal? About an opinion the principal had? Was the questions asked so her father could judge how serious Erica's behaviour was? So he could assess whether he trusted the principal's judgement?

Is corporal punishment relevant? Something else that used to be common in schools but now isn't?

Also - I think you missed Doriana's last questions.

Did the principal personally witness Erica's misbehavior? Or did he hear about it from her teacher? Or another student? Did the question relate to any of these things?

Today would we say that Erica that Erica had been bullied? Assaulted? Was Erica being the aggressor to someone else? Is it relevant on what particular part of the grounds the incident occurred?

Did the question relate to Erica's home life? How her parents disciplined her for misdoings?

Was the question related to the principal's own childhood/upbringing? Did the father ask why the principal was there observing the incident? Or about anything the principal was doing before/when the incident occurred?

Is anything medical relevant? Did the father question the principal's eyesight? Or anything else about his health?

Did the father's question involve any other faculty or staff? Maybe a secretary?

Was the father asking why the principal was in a physical location? Why he was looking/watching in a certain direction? Does the question involve whether children are supervised by adults at a particular time, when today it would be taken for granted that they were? Or that they were not?

Getting on the bus relevant? Is a playground relevant? Grassy area/field? The exterior walls of the building? Crossing the street? the parking lot?

Getting on the bus relevant? Is a playground relevant? Grassy area/field? The exterior walls of the building? Crossing the street? the parking lot?THE ANSWER TO ALL THESE QUESTIONS IS NO.
HINTS: THE QUESTION WAS DESIGNED TO EXPRESS DISAPPROVAL OF THE PRINCIPAL & WOULD HAVE THE SAME INTENT NOW, WHEN IT WOULD BE RHETORICAL.
HUGE HINT: THE QUESTION COULD NOT EVEN HAVE BEEN ASKED BEFORE 1949.

To do with television? Was Erica's action in imitation of a TV or other fictional character? Did the principal suggest it was? The father?

Or to do with a historical event that occurred in 1949?

Is 1984 relevant? YES Did the question involve Big Brother? NOT EXPLICITLY, BUT THIS IS CLOSE ENOUGH FOR ME TO DECLARE A

******* SPOILER **********
The principal of the Brooklyn Ethical Culture School called my father in 1956 to report that, on the steps outside the school, she heard me say 'no' when my sister asked me if I could help carry her books "Miss Rutledge," my father asked her gently, "Have you read 1984"?
