[WiZ] Craig's List

Postby WiZ » Sun Jan 27, 2019 7:37 pm

Craig and his three friends move into a student flat*, which is a little short on floor space. They have two 3-person sofas, but not enough room in the living room for both at once (without violating Health and Safety principles). However, they find a novel solution to this problem. What do they do?

*i.e. the three of them are renting a house together.

To eliminate the obvious - do they violate the Health and Safety Code? Put one of the sofas in another room? Would it be possible for them to put both of the sofas in the same room, but they can't do this because it would violate the code? Is the exact wording of the code relevant?

Do they keep both sofas? Do they modify any of them? Stack them on top of one another? Is their goal to: keep the sofas? Maximize number if seats? Maximize area suitable for sitting? Relevant what activities they want to perform in the sofas? Other rooms relevant?

To eliminate the obvious - do they violate the Health and Safety Code? no Put one of the sofas in another room? no Would it be possible for them to put both of the sofas in the same room, but they can't do this because it would violate the code? yes (as well as create serious pathfinding issues for those in the room) Is the exact wording of the code relevant? No; the spirit of the thing is that it would be near-impossible to manoeuvre oneself around them, which is problematic from a practical as well as a legal standpoint - 'It's not just the law, it's a good idea' and all that

GalFisk

Do they keep both sofas? yes Do they modify any of them? no, world's smallest ish Stack them on top of one another? no Is their goal to: keep the sofas? yes Maximize number if seats? yes Maximize area suitable for sitting? yes, as circumstances demand Relevant what activities they want to perform in the sofas? no, assume 'sitting on them' Other rooms relevant? no

Balin

Does their solution keep both sofas intact? yes

Relevant what way the sofas are facing? Are they tilted? Tipped over? Placed in a way one ordinarily wouldn't?

Do all the sofas have all their legs on the floor? Do they have removable cushions? Are the sofas modified? Are they used in more than one way? Such as both sofas and beds?

Do they have wall-mounted shelves that they are able to secure the sofa to? Do people sit on the sofa while it’s in the air? Is it easily moved to the ground? Is there an unusual feature of the loft that enables this set-up? Do they have to rig a pulley or something?

Are the sofas inflatable? Are they filled with helium? Attached to ropes for lowering?

***** SPOILER *****

One of the sofas was inflatable. Craig and his mates filled it with helium and stored it on the ceiling, pulling it down when it was required.

Congratulations, Balin, on the solution, and thank you everyone for playing!

Given how much inflatable furniture my sister had when we were teens I should’ve figured that one out. Much more logical than mounting a sofa to a wall shelf. Jesus.
