[Balin] No, a hickory daiquiri would taste terrible

Ryan wakes up each morning at 7:30, so why does he have an alarm set for 4:30 a.m.?

Does the alarm wake him up? Does he set the alarm for himself? Is it in the same room as he? Is it somewhere far away? Is anyone else involved?

Does the alarm set for 4:30 somehow actually wake him up at 7:30? Are time zones involved? Does he take 3 hours to wake up to an alarm (I have been sanctioned by a prior employer due to suffering from this)?

Does the set alarm accomplish anything other than making a loud noise? Does it vibrate, move, generate light, or anything similar to any meaningful effect?

Are mice relevant? Doctors?

Does the alarm wake someone else up? Wake him up do that he can wake someone else up? Wake him up so that he can do something related to someone else? Does someone else sleep in the same room? Does he have only one alarm clock? Does he wake up to an alarm at 7:30? Is the clock relevantly a mechanical one where an alarm can't be set more than 12 hours in advance?

His roommate does not put the alarm because he knows that Ryan will? If Ryan did not put the alarm at 4.30 a.m. would the roommate wake up as well on time? Does the roommate suffer from relevant diseases? Had Ryan not a roommate, would he set the 4.30 a.m. alarm as well? Does the roommate wake up and set the alarm to 7.30 a.m. so that Ryan can wake up later? Is it a matter of comfortability? Did they decide together to put two alarms? Do they move the alarm (which is a clock? A phone?) from a place to another during the night? Is the aim to avoid to wake each other up? Is the 4.30 alarm set off? If so by Ryan? By the roommate? Relevant?

To be sure...can we assume that Ryan goes to bed at 11 p.m. the nights before setting the alarm and that he has a regular sleep? (On the contrary he could experiment polyphasic sleep and put the alarm to have his 3 hours sleep before waking up)? Again...he does not need to take pills/medicines or whatsoever right? Is the tone of the alarm relevant? The theme?

Does he not want the roommate to be awake while he is asleep? Does he think his roommate might: steal? Rob? Kill? Shirk a responsibility? Not get up? Use drugs? Take photos or video? Destroy? Forget? Leave a mess? Not lock the door when leaving? Is the distrust general? Specific?

Does Ryan suspect that his roommate will forget to lock the door? Forget to put the garbage out? Forget something else?

Does Ryan simply want to hinder his roommate’s quest for a good sleep? Does he want to sabotage something the roommate will be doing later in the day?

Does Ryan set the 4:30 alarm every day? Is it a one-time occurrence?

If Ryan didn't set the alarm for 4:30, would the roommate set one instead? Would that somehow be more disturbing to Ryan? Eg if the roommate has a tendency to keep snoozing his alarm, so Ryan sets one himself to force the roommate out of bed?

Is Ryan's primary aim to improve his own sleep? Worsen the roommate's sleep? Avoid the roommate doing something bad to Ryan?

If Ryan didn't set the alarm, would the roommate wake up later? Does Ryan want the roommate to be on time for work, so he can pay his share of the rent? Does Ryan wake up before his roommate? At the same time? Relevant? Doe the roommate do the bad thing on purpose? Out of neglect? Malice? Stupidity? Does the roommate snore a lot? Sleepwalk? Raid the fridge?

Showering relevant? Does the roommate use up all of the hot water? And Ryan wants him to shower early so that the water will have been re-heated by the time Ryan gets up?

Showering relevant? Does the roommate use up all of the hot water? And Ryan wants him to shower early so that the water will have been re-heated by the time Ryan gets up? That is absolutely, thoroughly correct. Fantastic leap!

****SPOILER****

Ryan wakes up at 7:30, and his roommate has been getting up with his alarm and stealing the shower, using up the hot water. To stop this, Ryan has been setting another alarm earlier and earlier. When the first (4:30) alarm goes off, the roommate goes straight for the shower while Ryan turns it off and goes back to sleep.

Nice puzzle! I wish I could say my leap was not at all related to my personal experience of living with roommates, but been there, done that (the water part, not the alarm part...).
