[Balin] This page intentionally left blank

Postby Balin » Thu May 07, 2020 1:29 am

The day a paper is due, a student walks into class having written nothing. He has no time to write anything more than a few sentences before class begins, and he has no work from another class he can substitute for his assignment. Yet he receives an 80 on the assignment. How?

ROIMBT. OAATP rules apply - I'm actually going to remember to enforce them this time (hopefully). PM early shpoylas.

Not to be confused with, and not related to, Gregory's puzzle in the archives with the same title.

Is the 80 good? Bad? Abysmal? Excellent? Deserved?

Assuming he does use the time to write a few sentences, do these sentences constitute a completion (partial or otherwise) of the assignment, or are they put to another use (such as inveigling the teacher into granting an extension/compassionate consideration or contriving an excuse to make it appear that the student had done more than he really did?)

Is he graded on, and only on, the few sentences he has time to write before class begins?

To be sure: assuming that he was in a school and the school was not his house (as in covid times), and that the assignment was given by a Professor to students, was the paper taken by the Professor the day it was due? Later? Later due to covid restrictions? As soon as the class began? At the end of the class? In a moment which gave an advantage to the student with respect to people having completed it before?

Okay. So he doesn’t write those few sentences at all. Would he have been able to hand in anything even if he had something completed?

Did he hand in the paper later? Earlier? Not at all?

Was this a paper-making class, and he has crafted the sheet of paper as his assignment?

Did he hand in the paper later? Earlier? Not at all? This, explore

Was this a paper-making class, and he has crafted the sheet of paper as his assignment? Very clever idea!... but not the solution.

Was he supposed to hand in his paper? Submit it some other way? Email? Telegram? Through a website like blackboard or turnitin.com? Read it to the class? Did he in fact do any of this?

Did he "read" a blank or incomplete paper, making it up as he went?

Did he "read" a blank or incomplete paper, making it up as he went? Yep.

****SPOILER****

The teacher asked students to read their papers in front of the class, but never collected them. So the student brought up a blank sheet of paper and improvised successfully enough to earn a decent grade.

Nicely done!
