[gregoryuconn] The Nurse Called the Lady With the Alligator

Because I had one medical issue, the nurse thought my mother had another one. Why?

your mom's name isn't Miss Lucy, is it? *g*

mumps/measles relevant? hiccups? eating non-food items? (I have a preschool teacher for a mother, recognizing nursery rhymes is an occupational hazard, so to speak)

I didn't think her name was Lucy, just making sure. As an aside, mom works with a "Miss Lucy" in the Mandarin classroom...Lucy's the Mandarin-speaking teacher, Mom's the English-speaking one. I wonder how this rhyme goes in Mandarin...

Is the title relevant in any way, shape or form whatsoever?

Was this medical issue that you had easily treatable? Or more serious? Was it a contagious disease? Or something like a broken limb or other physical injury?

Same q's for the issue they thought your mother had - did she actually have any medical issue at all?

Was this recent? Or was it when you were a child? Infant? Newborn? Was it while your mother was pregnant with you?

Is the title relevant in any way, shape or form whatsoever? Part of it.

Was this medical issue that you had easily treatable? Yes. Or more serious? Was it a contagious disease? Or something like a broken limb or other physical injury? "Physical injury" is closest.

Same q's for the issue they thought your mother had It would have been pretty serious, but it's neither contagious nor a physical injury. - did she actually have any medical issue at all? No!

Was this recent? No Or was it when you were a child? Yes. Infant? Newborn? Was it while your mother was pregnant with you? No to rest.

Child: Preschool age? Elementary school? Middle school? High school? (since I didn't categorize 'teenager' separately)

did they think your mother had cancer? (though I've got no idea what your having an injury would mean for that)

had you been bruised somehow? accidentally? on purpose? blood clotting problems? (I don't think you've ever said anything about hemophilia-like conditions before, so honestly I doubt it, but just being thorough)

Was your easily treatable condition temporary? or permanent, but taking medication would ease/prevent the effects?

did they think she had mistreated you? Munchausen's by Proxy?

Did the nurse think so because of something you said? Did you phrase something in a way that made it sound like your mom had a medical issue?

Was she a nurse you encountered during a doctor's appointment? At school? Relevant?

Was she thought to have a condition because she failed to notice a symptom in you? E.g. She didn't hear you coughing, so the nurse thought she must be deaf? Or, WAG, there was some discoloration on your body, and since your mom didn't notice it, perhaps she's color-blind?

Just to check, was the nurse correct about the injury-ish she thought you had? Was it a bug bite? A burn? A scratch? An allergy?
Did she think your mom had a genetic disease or disorder? A neurological condition? Or psychological?

Was the nurse relying on some kind of generalization that if a kid has X, often the parent has Y?

Relevant how you got the injury-ish? Did it cause you pain? Discomfort? Did it heal by itself? Was it on your skin? Did the nurse think your mother caused it? Your mother should've responded more, or responded differently, to it?

Relevant how you got the injury-ish? No. Did it cause you pain? Yes. Discomfort? Not sure what the difference between pain and discomfort is. Did it heal by itself? No (but irrelevant.) Was it on your skin? No. Did the nurse think your mother caused it? No. Your mother should've responded more, or responded differently, to it? Differently (and probably more too, but differently is more important.)

Did you have the injury-ish before coming to school? Did the nurse think that your mom knew of the hurt and did nothing? Or did something irrational in response to it?

Did your mom attempt to treat the injury? If so, did she treat it by doing something that the nurse considered illogical/irrational? Did she use a folk remedy? A different means of achieving the same end that traditional medicine would (e.g., a wooden spoon in place of a splint, which my grandmother had to resort to once)? Did she relieve the pain without fixing the actual injury? or vice versa?

Did your mom do something that she knew would not resolve the injury-ish, but would comfort you, a child? For example, employing the placebo effect and telling you that some nonsense cure would work? But the nurse did not understand she was tricking you and thought your mom actually believed the nonsense?

Did you have the injury-ish before coming to school? I don't believe so, but it was a long time ago so I don't recall Did the nurse think that your mom knew of the hurt and did nothing? Or did something irrational in response to it? In any case, this is all irrelevant.

Did your mom attempt to treat the injury? No. If so, did she treat it by doing something that the nurse considered illogical/irrational? No. Did she use a folk remedy? Did your mom know about the injury-ish? At some point in this puzzle. Did the nurse think she knew? Yes, she would definitely have known my mom knew once she knew. Was it a bad tooth? Yes,’it was a toothache. That doesn’t help you that much though.

Timeline:
1. You got a toothache at school
2. You went to the school nurse
3. The nurse called your mom and said you had a toothache
4. Your mom responded in an unusual way
5. The nurse concluded that she was delusional
Correct?

Did the nurse call anyone else? Did your mom call anyone else? Did either of them relevantly speak to you after the call was initiated?

Did your mom hang up on the nurse? Was your mom responding to/interacting with someone or something else, and the nurse thought she was addressing her?

Did the nurse conclude your mom was delusional based on something said over the phone?

Did the nurse ask your mom to pick you up from school? Did your mom do so? No to both.

Did the nurse call anyone else? No. Did your mom call anyone else? GIven the circumstances, she may have, but it doesn't really matter to this puzzle if she actually did. Did either of them relevantly speak to you after the call was initiated? No.

Did your mom hang up on the nurse? Not relevantly. Was your mom responding to/interacting with someone or something else, and the nurse thought she was addressing her? Yesish as regards to responding to something else, no to the other three permutations of that question.

Did the nurse conclude your mom was delusional based on something said over the phone? Yes.

No to the rest of these Did the nurse think she was talking about something other than what she was actually talking about? She was unaware of what she was referring to and therefore thought she was delusional/otherwise mentally ill.

No Relevant where she is taking the call? Is she at work? She was a stay at home mom and was at home but even if she wasn’t she may very well have been at home for relevant reasons which you have yet to establish.

Was your mom referring to another medical issue of yours? No

Was anyone else at home when your mom took the call? If so, another family member? My dad might have been. If he was, it's relevant why, but he's not otherwise important to this puzzle. a friend of your mom? a repairman? some other contractor? No to the rest of these.
Was she at home because she was waiting for someone? Was she waiting for a different call? She might have been at home regardless, but she also had a very good reason for not leaving. It's not any of the ones you mentioned, though.

As I said above, there is another relevant event which you have yet to establish, and which you really might want to.

Did the relevant event involve you? Your mom? Someone else? Multiple other people were involved, but not me or me mom. Waiting for something? No. Something unexpected? Yes, for most of the people involved and certainly everyone who was uninvolved. Teeth? No.

Was the unexpected event an accident? A planned surprise? A gift? A win? Something televised?

Was the unexpected event an accident? No A planned surprise? I mean, it was a surprise to all but those who planned it, but if you’re thinking a surprise party or something, you’re very much OTWT A gift? No A win? No Something televised? It was definitely on TV, but be careful of FAs.

9/11 relevant? If so, had your mom already heard/seen on TV what had happened, while the news had not yet reached the school? And she referenced the events when the nurse called, but the nurse thought she was delusional because she was blissfully unaware of the events?

Ooh, good thought Doriana. If not that exactly, was your mom hostile or seemingly hostile toward the nurse? Maybe because she thought the school calling the house would be news of something much worse? And/or that a toothache was a ridiculously small concern compared to what was going on?

If not 9-11, had another violent attack occurred? Natural disaster?

There’s something specific she said that made the nurse think she was delusional, but you just solved 99 percent of it!

Did she mention the WTC? planes? terrorists? the police? the military? the president? None of these. being in danger? This was implied presumably, but it was a more specific statement than that.

Did she mention death? Shock? That something would be difficult or impossible to do? Uncertainty? Fear?

Did she say something related to the attacks? To herself? To you? To the school? The nurse? To society? To the emergency response?

Did she say something related to the attacks? Yes To herself? No To you? Yes, but this wasn’t the part that made the nurse worry To the school? No The nurse? The comment involved her too, but again, this was t the worrisome part. To society? In a way, and this definitely was what made the nurse worry. To the emergency response? No

Did she say something about war? Government? Military? Had the towers fallen at the time? Relevant? Relevant how much was known about the attacks or attackers at the time?

Did she say something about war? Not spcifically. Government? Same Military? Same. Had the towers fallen at the time? Probably. Relevant? Only in that it was clear to my mom how serious this was. Relevant how much was known about the attacks or attackers at the time? Attacks, yes, attackers, no.

Is the risk of more attacks relevant? Had the Pentagon been hit yet? Relevant?

Is the risk of more attacks relevant? Had the Pentagon been hit yet? Relevant? All irrelevant. It's a lot simpler than you're making it out to be. There is NO other information to be determined besides the phrase my mom used.

Did she say one sentence? A few words? "We're under attack"? Something like that?
Edit: are common aspects of paranoid delusions relevant? Such as being under government surveillance or control? Conspiracy theories? Believing oneself to be chosen to do something? Or targeted by someone?

Did she say one sentence? Yes A few words? "We're under attack"? Not quite Something like that? It was more like “______ and you’re complaining that he has a toothache?” But the relevant part is somewhat similar to that but not that.
Edit: are common aspects of paranoid delusions relevant? Yes Such as being under government surveillance or control? Conspiracy theories? Believing oneself to be chosen to do something? Or targeted by someone? None of these though.

The world is ending? A war has started? The aliens are coming? Judgement day is here? NY/WTC is burning? Was the thing she said factual? Metaphorical? A figure of speech?

The world is ending? Bingo! A war has started? The aliens are coming? Judgement day is here? NY/WTC is burning? Was the thing she said factual? Metaphorical? A figure of speech?

****SPOILER*****

I had a horrible toothache on 9/11, and the nurse called my mother to tell her what was going on. The nurse was blissfully unaware of the events of the morning, as the school had elected not to tell staff to avoid worrying students. My mom, however, knew full well what was going on, assumed the nurse knew as well, and said "The world is ending and you're bothering me about a toothache?" The nurse assumed she was crazy until she found out what was going on

Also, the title is too long for me to add a spoiler tag to the subject, so please just move this after a bit, mods.

Ah, good one. Nice job getting the last bit, Galfisk.

gregory were you also living in Northern VA at the time? I distinctly remember the panic of parents once the Pentagon got hit--the fear was real.

No, I was in New York State, about 75 miles north of Manhattan. But yeah, the fear was real there too, and the nurse was way too far away from Ground Zero to be able to look out the window and see the smoke, unlike here probably.
